Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How is Employee Provident Fund (EPF) calculated in India?

EPF is calculated as 12% of (Basic Salary + Dearness Allowance). An equal 12% contribution is made by your employer, where 8.33% (up to ₹1,250/month) goes toward the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) and 3.67% goes directly to the EPF account.

What is the statutory ₹15,000 basic wage ceiling for PF?

By law, PF is mandatory for employees earning basic wage up to ₹15,000/month. For employees with higher basic salaries, companies can either calculate PF on actual basic salary or cap contributions at the statutory limit of ₹1,800/month (12% of ₹15,000).

What is the current EPF interest rate for FY 2026-27?

The EPFO declares the annual interest rate for provident fund deposits, historically ranging between 8.15% and 8.25% p.a., credited annually and compounded monthly.

Is EPF interest taxable above ₹2.5 Lakh annual contribution?

Yes. If an employee's annual EPF contribution exceeds ₹2.5 Lakh in a financial year (where employer also contributes), interest earned on the excess contribution amount is taxable as Income from Other Sources.
